  • TAMPA, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Lightning are disappointed, though not discouraged. Despite being swept in the first round of the NHL playoffs, the young team led by Steven Stamkos has plenty of reasons to feel encouraged about the future. One year after struggling to the 28th-best record in the league, the Lightning finished second in the Atlantic Division and posted the third-best mark in the Eastern Conference. The Montreal Canadiens eliminated them from the post-season in four games, but coach Jon Cooper said none of his players should hang their heads because the Lightning had a successful season. "Its been a transition year for us in an unbelievably positive way," said Cooper, whos completing his first full season behind the bench. "I dont want this series to be looked at as they were a failure," Cooper added. "Those guys got swept in the first round, but they had a heck of a year." Stamkos missed 45 games because of a broken right leg but still amassed 25 goals and 40 points in 37 games to help Tampa Bay return to the playoffs for the first time since 2011. The 24-year-old captain has scored more goals than any NHL player since the start of the 2009-10 season. His absence from early November to just before a late-season trade sent Martin St. Louis to the New York Rangers created unexpected opportunities for several young players who helped the team stay afloat while Stamkos was out. Goaltender Ben Bishop set a franchise record with 37 victories before a left elbow injury sidelined him for the final week of the regular season and the playoffs. Rookie Ondrej Palate led the team with 59 points and another first-year player, Tyler Johnson, set a club record for rookies with 24 goals. In all, Tampa Bays rookies combined for 201 points, more than twice as many for first-year players from any other team. "Its been well documented what this team has gone through this year," Cooper said, adding that few people gave the Lightning much of a shot at making the playoffs when the season began. Stamkos said its important young players learn from their post-season experience. The Lightning dropped the first two games to the Canadiens at home and didnt feel they played their best hockey until the third period of Game 4 in Montreal on Tuesday night. "Everyones probably feeling a little embarrassed. But in the long run, you probably had to go through something like this," Stamkos said. "I think we will learn," the captain added, "that sacrifice, determination and work ethic is what wins at this time of year." Ryan Callahan, the former Rangers captain obtained in the deal that sent an unhappy St. Louis to New York, agreed. "This means nothing if as a group (the Lightning) doesnt realize how hard the playoffs are and how consistent you have to be moving forward," Callahan said. "Its a waste if you dont learn from it." Eight rookies made their playoff debut in Game 1, while another key player -- goalie Anders Lindback, standing in for Bishop -- entered the series with just 13 minutes of post-season experience. Six first-year players notched their first playoff points in the opener, won by the Canadiens 5-4 in overtime. The next step is returning next season and proving this years success wasnt a fluke. "The amount of youth that we have here is very promising," Stamkos said. "We want to be a perennial playoff team. This is a start." cheap jerseys . His competitive career, too. "I think it will be settled for a while," Velasquez said.AUSTIN, Texas -- No. 6 Kansas was rolling. The Jayhawks had won seven consecutive games to move to the top of the Big 12. They looked ready to cruise to another league title. So much for that idea. One trip down to No. 25 Texas showed the conference race is far from over. Wayne Selden Jr. scored 21 points, but Kansas struggled for much of an 81-69 loss to the Longhorns on Saturday. Isaiah Taylor scored 23 points and Jonathan Holmes had 22 as Texas earned its sixth consecutive win and pulled within a game of Kansas about halfway through the Big 12 schedule. "It was pretty much a dominating performance by the Longhorns over us today," Kansas coach Bill Self said. The Longhorns (17-4, 6-2), who lost their top four scorers from a 16-18 squad a year ago, have been the surprise of the Big 12 this season. Texas thumped the Jayhawks (16-5, 7-1) with suffocating defence that held the Big 12s best shooting team to 39 per cent from the floor. Kansas freshman Andrew Wiggins of Vaughan, Ont., who averaged 24 points over the previous three games, scored seven before fouling out late. The Longhorns outshot and outrebounded the Jayhawks, had 12 blocks, and once they built a double-digit lead, never left Kansas an opening to rally. "We didnt come with a lot of energy tonight. That was the result," Jayhawks forward Perry Ellis said. Taylor, a freshman guard who scored 27 a week earlier against Baylor, continued to slash his way through the Jayhawks for layups and floating jumpers, while Holmes hit from inside and outside. Holmes also went 9 for 10 from the free-throw line. Cameron Ridley added nine points, 10 rebounds and four blocks for Texas, winning his battle under the basket with Joel Embiid, Kannsas 7-foot centre.dddddddddddd. Prince Ibeh also had four blocks. "We know its a long season," Selden said. "Well get back to Lawrence, regroup." The first half was pure frustration for the Jayhawks, who came in shooting 51 per cent as a team. Nothing, not even the open shots, seemed to find their way in the basket. Texas zone defence held the Jayhawks to 8-of-31 shooting in the half. Taylor and Holmes each scored 11 points and Ridley used his powerful body to push around the slender Embiid. When Holmes blocked a shot, grabbed the loose ball and raced up the court for a layup, the Jayhawks Frank Mason met him at the basket with a hard foul and the two players had to be separated. Kansas Brannen Greene was then whistled for a technical foul. Holmes made three of four free throws and Texas led 38-23 at halftime. Texas blew it open early in the second half with an emphatic basket by Ridley: a one-step, two-handed dunk over Embiid. Ridley converted the three-point play and Texas led 47-27. Kansas finally answered with consecutive 3-pointers but the Jayhawks couldnt piece together a run that could pull them close. Texas simply wouldnt let them. Holmes had a key 3-pointer and followed it with another tough layup. Demarcus Holland had the task of guarding Wiggins most of the game and despite giving up six inches, did a masterful job of frustrating the freshman into a rough shooting night. Wiggins fouled out with just over two minutes left, ending a 2-for-12 performance from the field. Holland also grabbed a team-high 11 rebonds. "I tried to box him out every opportunity," Holland said. "Cam and Prince were scaring him and he was settling for jump shots." ' ' '

  • As much as Jets Coach Claude Noel didnt want to get into a game of trading chances against the Edmonton Oilers, that is the kind of game it turned into. But not because it was a wide open end to end affair, it was because both teams were guilty of turning pucks over, mishandling passes and making bad decisions. Coach Noel summed it up this way, "we were sloppy with the puck." But the Oilers used an offensive outburst in the third to win 5-3. At times games on trade deadline day can be tough to play. The focus after the morning skate from the media is all about trades, players dont rest as much in the afternoon as they normally would, perhaps trying to keep up with which players are on the move, are they on the move, plus dealing with people leaving their dressing room. However this was a game the Jets needed to win as this eight-game home stand continues. The game was scoreless until Kyle Wellwood on a power play put the Jets in front at the 15:45 mark of the second. But Ryan Whitney answered that with a power play goal 1:14 later, only to have Alexander Burmistrov send the Jets to the dressing room up 2-1 after two periods. Nik Antropov made a great pass on the Wellwood goal snapping a 13 game pointless drought, while Dustin Byfugliens assist on Burmistrovs goal extended his point streak to seven, establishing a new career high. Simply put this was a strange game, and it continued that way into the third. It started with Blake Wheeler and Andrew Ladd on a two on one. A chance to give the Jets a two goal lead, but Jeff Petry made a solid defensive play not allowing Wheeler a shot or a passing lane as he sprawled to block the play. On his way up Wheelers stick caught him up high and a Jets scoring chance turned into an Edmonton power play. Then the flood gates opened. Ryan Jones on the power play 2-2, then Randy Jones lost his balance and fell trying to keep a puck in the Oilers zone and Lennart Petrell converted a two on one into the go ahead goal. That one 35 seconds after the Oilers tying goal. Petrell and Taylor Hall hooked up to make it 4-2, Jordan Eberle with a great move to the back hand converted on an breakaway and the the Oilers had a 5-2 lead. With six attackers Antropov scored his ninth of the year at 18:50 assited by Evander Kane and Byfuglien, and in the next 20 seconds the Jets had three great scoring chances that would have made it a one goal game. Byfuglien ended the night with two assits giving him five straight two point games. Eight of his last 10 games have been multiple point games. Kane extended his point streak to seven, while Wheeler saw his end at six, Ladd and Bryan Little had theirs end at five and four respectively. Jets were minus Zach Bogosian but it appears he will be ready for Thursdays game against Florida, as the home stand continues (TSN Jets, TSN 1290). Earlier in the day the Jets traded Johnny Oduya to Chicago for a second and a third round draft pick in 2013, while picking up 26-year-old Grant Clitsome of waivers from Columbus. Players interviewed on TSN Jets post game felt they came out flat to start the third and it cost them. "It was a tough game," is how Coach Noel started his post game news conference. "Hard to identify who our best players were. Right from the start I didnt like the way we were thinking. We didnt play great from the goalie on out. Not sure why, did the St. Louis game take its toll. We looked tired, worn down. Didnt have any pop. Everybody looked the same, why is that? We have a couple of days to breathe and well have to manage those two days." This did end a stretch for the Jets of eight games in 14 days. But he also gave the Oilers credit for a well played game. "They showed their speed and skill." A win Thursday allows the Jets to continue the challenge for top spot in the Southeast, a Panthers win would give them some breathing room on the Jets. Thats how close it is, and if the Jets can get back to playing the way they did when they went six games without a regulation loss, that is how close the race will stay. Cheap Michael Kors HandBags . • Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - Miguel Cabrera belted a pair of two-run homers and Brennan Boesch went 4-for-4 with a two-run shot, four runs batted in and four runs scored, as the Detroit Tigers salvaged the finale of their season- opening series at Yankee Stadium with a 10-7 victory over New York. Ramon Santiago and Ryan Raburn each finished with two hits and an RBI for the Tigers, who were beaten 6-3 and 10-6 in the first two games of the series. Max Scherzer went the requisite five innings for the victory. Scherzer (1-0) was tagged for six runs on nine hits, four of which were homers, and two walks with six strikeouts. Jose Valverde pitched the ninth for his first save. Mark Teixeira continued his surprisingly strong start for New York with his third home run in as many games. He became the first Yankee to homer in each of the seasons first three games since Dave Winfield in 1983. Jorge Posada clubbed a pair of two-run homers in defeat and Robinson Cano also homered. Nick Swisher contributed three hits with an RBI double and two runs scored for New York, while Russell Martin also chipped in with three hits. Yankee starter Phil Hughes (0-1), coming off a 18-win season, went just four innings in defeat. He was roughed up for five runs on five hits and two walks with one strikeout. Location was big. Obviously my velocity wasnt what Id like it to be at this stage of the season, Hughes said. When Im not hitting my spots and my velocitys a little bit down, its not going to be a very good outcome. The Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Boesch stroked a two-out single and Cabrera followed with a drive into the left field seats for his first home run of the game. New York tied it in the second on a two-run blast by Posada, but Detroit regained the lead with three more in the third. Austin Jackson drew a leadoff walk, stole second with one out and scored on a bloop single to center by Boesch. Cabrera then deposited a 1-1 pitch into the left field bleachers for another homer to make it 5-2. The Yankees answered with a pair of solo homers in the home third and had a chance for more. Teixeira found the right field seats with one out and Cano lifted a shot just over the wall down the right field line for his first of the year. After Swisher singled with two outs, he raced to third when Raburn dropped Posadas line drive to left field for a two-base error but Curtis Granderson left both stranded with a fly ball to right. New York threatened again in the fourth with two on and one out. Teixeira, though, lofted a fly ball to deep right field and Alex Rodriguez also flied to warning track in right. The Tigers then tacked on two more in the fifth against Bartolo Colon in his Yankee debut. Santiago greeted the veteran right-hander with a base hit and Boesch followed with his first home run of the year for a 7-4 advantage. Again the Yankees rallied in the bottom of the inning. Swisher walked with one out and Posada followed with a shot over the right field wall to again make it a one-run game. Detroit, however, continued to pound New York pitching and scored two in the sixth. Santiago doubled home a run and Boesch lined out to left to plate another for a 9-6 lead. The Yankees got one back in the seventh when Swisher doubled home Cano, but Phil Coke got Posada on a fly ball to left and Jackson made a running catch in deep center on a ball hit by Granderson. Coke had surrendered the go-ahead homer to Granderson in Thursdays opener. It wasnt necessarily stop the bleeding, it was go out there and assert yourself, Coke said. Youve got to go out there and impose your will and not let them impose their will on you. Detroit added an insurance run in the ninth against Joba Chamberlain when Boesch led off with a single and eventually scored on a two-out double by Raburn. GAME NOTES:Cabrera, who recorded his 19th career multi-homer game, has six homers in his last seven games at Yankee Stadium. He is 7-for-14 with three homers lifetime against Hughes...Teixeira, a notoriously slow starter, didnt hit his third home run of the season last year until May 8...Posada notched his 17th career multi-homer game and first since 2009...The Tigers gave outfielder Magglio Ordonez the day off because of a sore right ankle. He broke his ankle last July and missed the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery...Detroit will continue its season-opening road trip on Monday in Baltimore to start a three-game series before playing its home opener next Friday against Kansas City...The Yankees will next play four games against Minnesota, starting Monday night in the Bronx. http://www.themichaelkorshandbagsoutlet.com/michael-kors-drawstring-bags-outlet/ .
