EzTerixNaming 15 categories off the top of my head, most of these are probably pretty vague, but getting too specific won't let lots of maps get into categories.
Action (would fall under almost all games) Horror (House Haunted, The Thing, etc) Adventure (A game with RPG elements, LOTR) Strategy (Diplomacy, Civilization, etc) Melee (Regular Starcraft maps) Puzzle (puzzle solving, Tetris, etc) Survival (Zombies, open ended category) Defence (Sunken Tower Defence, etc) Role-playing(Any role playing game) Vehicle(Driving test, vehicle oriented) Sports(games with sports) Movies(not games, mini movies :p) Hide and Seek(Hide and seek, tree tag w/e) Miscellaneous(any other game) Party game( Mini game parties wooo)
These are the game categories I thought of.
Thanks for the info, it seems you have a good eye for variety. My comments: 1. Action and Misc. are way too broad. You can assume Misc. is a subset of "uncategorized". 2. Vehicle is too narrow (for SC maps) 3. Definitely needs a "Arena" (dota-like and loosely related games) category 4. Could use a Board Game category (Stratego, Chess, Monopoly, etc.) - there's more variety here than you might expect on SC. 5. Could use a "Micro Control" category (LOTS of micro-control type games hosted) 6. Could use a "Bounds" category as well, same reason. 7. Adventure overlaps too much with RPG. What one would ordinarily call an Adventure game in console/PC gaming is often labeled an RPG in SC. 8. Minigames are pretty much dominated by one map (Minigame Party). There are others but they can fall into other categories. 9. Horror is overlapped completely by Survival and RPG.
So how about this: 1. Melee (Regular Starcraft maps) 2. Bounds (any obstacle course) 3. Strategy (Diplo/civ, and other games involving long-term strategic thinking) 4. Puzzle (puzzle solving, Tetris, etc) 5. Survival (Zombies, open ended category) 6. Defence (Sunken Tower Defence, etc) 7. Role-playing (Any role playing game) 8. Sports (games with sports) 9. Movies (not games, mini movies :p) 10. Hide and Seek (Hide and seek, tree tag w/e) 11. Board Games (Stratego, Monopoly, etc) 12. Micro Control (vulture control, rine control, etc.) 13. Arena (Temple Siege, Storm the Fort, StarQuest, etc)
...and you can have a couple of wildcards, like splitting one of the above categories if it is too broad. (the 15 limit is entirely arbitrary, it just seems to be a good number based on what categories are supposed to do)
